Recent Algonquin Review: "Many old classic NYC hotels are just tired has-beens barely hanging on, but this Grande Old Dame still has the legs to make you say "Wow"! The lobby is classic: beautifully maintained, expertly designed, with a still vibrant "arts" scene, reminiscent of the days when Dorothy Parker, William Faulkner, et al lunched there regularly. And fresh scent, without any of those "old" odros often found in these classic hotels. It is great to find night and day life and vibrance in a lobby other than people rushing to leave or register. The staff is sincerely friendly and warm without being officious or solicitous. Matilda the rag doll cat is a wonderful icon of old-time hotel lobby mascots. The room was actually much roomier than most older NYC hotels, and plenty of room in the bathroom and a phone too. Our only complaints were extremely minor and simply due to the endhanced design skills of my lady, a high end interior designer: A small plate on the wall far in the back of the lobby was a bit lacking proportion adn seemed out of place as a wall decoration, and the room's cream color favored a flesh tone that seemed odd (but was not offensive). But if that's all she could come up with, the Algonquin is doing a great job. We WILL be back!!"

Location
The Algonquin Hotel stands on historic West 44th Street in the center of New York, N.Y. This Midtown Manhattan hotel is within four blocks of shopping, dining and entertainment on Broadway, Times Square and Fifth Avenue.
Overview
Since the 1920s, literary luminaries have frequented the historic Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection. Perhaps best known as the home of the Algonquin Round Table, the hotel regularly hosted this group of talented young writers--which included New Yorker founder Harold Ross and the singular Dorothy Parker. Today, this 4-star property's location between Fifth Avenue and the neon heart of Times Square places you steps from both upscale shopping and theater. (If you're lucky, you might catch a play that one of Parker's pals penned.)

Less than a 10-minute stroll from the Algonquin, you can look up Parker's oeuvre at the New York Public Library, then grab a sandwich in adjacent Bryant Park. If you're in the mood for more dynamic entertainment, check out the schedule at Radio City Music Hall, an easy 6 blocks from the hotel.

You don't have to leave The Algonquin for a show, though: Reserve a table for dinner and cabaret, offered seasonally, at the Oak Room Supper Club. The venue has hosted greats like Harry Connick, Jr. and Diana Krall. For a quieter night, dine at the Round Table Room, where Natalie Ascencio's painting A Vicious Circle immortalizes the infamous literary lunch crowd. Room service is also available from 7:30 AM-10:30 PM daily. Enjoy a cocktail in Blue Bar or in the elegant lobby lounge, where the Algonquin's resident cat may pay you a visit while you linger. Before bed, you can fit in a workout in the fitness center, or catch up on work in the business center; both are open 24 hours.

Renovated in 2009, Hotel Rooms offer Edwardian-style furnishings and beds with comfy pillowtop mattresses. Flat-screen TVs come with DVD players, premium cable channels, and pay movies. Check email with complimentary wireless Internet access, available throughout the hotel, or curl up in a plush bathrobe with a complimentary copy of The New Yorker. In keeping with the hotel's literary history, you can also reserve a Kindle preloaded with your favorite book.

Hotel Features
Since opening in 1902, the Algonquin Hotel has had major renovations, although the appeal and ambience of its history are beautifully preserved. The famed Round Table literary group from the 1920s often met in the hotel's main dining room and founded the New Yorker magazine, comprised of American literary writers and icons including Harpo Marx, Dorothy Parker and George S. Kaufman. The style of the "Roaring" 1920s echoes in the lobby, which boasts antique desks, sofas and chairs bathed in deep jewel tones, creating the perfect spot for reading, writing and conversation. The intimate Oak Room Supper Club offers continental cuisine and cabaret performances on certain nights, and Blue Bar, home of the $10,000 Martini, serves casual fare and cocktails. The fitness center offers cardiovascular equipment, free weights, towels, fresh fruit and water.

Expert Tip
In the 1930s, the owner of the Algonquin, Frank Case, took in a disheveled cat in search of a full belly and started a hotel tradition. The current resident cat, Matilda, oversees the hotel staff in the back offices.

Some of NYC’s best-known landmarks are north of 14th and south of 59th—or Midtown Manhattan. Here, couples kiss atop the Empire State Building. Grand Central Station’s opal-faced clock is a famed meeting spot. While fortunes are made on Wall Street, fortunes are spent at Fifth Avenue’s shops. Other highlights include Madison Square Garden, the United Nations, and the Garment and Diamond districts.

    Recreation

Break a sweat on the cardio equipment in the Algonquin's 24-hour fitness center. You can also head to nearby Bryant Park for outdoor fun: ride the carousel, skate on the ice rink during winter months, or play Ping-Pong in the summer.
