Recent Candy Hostel Review: "We were very happy with our stay here. The employees were friendly and helpful. Subway stop very close on 96th. Other amenities such as a drug store, coffee shops, etc were near by. Being New York we planned on staying out all day and night and only needed a place to crash so the hostel works out great for that kind of need. One note is the address is not correct, it is not located on 95th but rather it is on 94th and there is no hostel sign just look for a green awning with 316 on it."

| A short guide to Upper West Side |
|
Some bemoan that the Upper West Side has become a version of the Upper East Side. Case in point: Columbus Circle’s Time Warner Center, one of New York’s priciest real estate. The Upper West Side includes the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the American Museum of Natural History, and Columbia University. Harlem, the legendary African American neighborhood, lies north and caps Manhattan.

| The room was the tiniest I've ever been in, but clean. At night I could hear a lot of door slamming, but after hours of sightseeing, I had no problem falling asleep.
Had the weather been less wonderful, I would've liked more comfort. But I was lucky, I only needed to be in the room when I went to bed.
he location is so good, that you can wonder around in the middle of the night and feel safe. |

| The hostel is similar to most hostels. The bathrooms were clean, beds uncomfortable, great location, decent neighborhood, towels (although small), very tiny rooms. The one light in the room was burnt out but they fixed it immediately which was nice. It's an affordable place to stay if you plan to stay out all day and just crash for the night. They had air conditioning which was a bonus. If you're high maintenance I wouldn't recommend this place, but if your not picky and cheap its grand. |

| The East entrance side of the Candy Hotel was actually a nicer location than the main entrance which we have stayed at 6 times previously. There is no lobby and eveyone was sitting in the entranceway with their laptops, but the room was cleaner, and quieter than our previous stays. We only use it as a place to sleep and go to NYC regularly and this place works perfect for an inexpensive, clean, safe place as far as NYC standards are. |

| I love the Upper East side so that part was fantastic, however I have stayed in other hostels in the same neighborhood and had a better experience. The bed was comfy but that was all that could fit in the private room (have previously had much larger rooms elsewhere). The staff never stopped cursing and couldn't answer simple questions about the city. For a hostel stay, no real complaints but I will be returning to the Continental (same chain, bigger rooms) rather than return to Candy. |

| The room was ready for me with no problems. However the couple checking in in front of me were told there was no room for them and they had them go to another hostel owned by the same company and stay there. I dont know whose fault this was but the hostel did get them a room. The room was very small, 1 twin bed and some shelves on the wall, thats it. It had a/c and one overhead light. Not a place you want to, or even could spend time in other then sleeping, but thats all I did, and for such a cheap price in NYC how can you beat it?
The room was clean, the sheets were clean, it was quiet and safe also, so no problems at all there. It was in the upper west side which is a pretty nice neighborhood, about 3 miles from mid-town though so you cant really walk there. You can find plenty of free on street parking around teh hostel.
The bad things. They said there was a TV in every room, mine did not have one, so all I could really do in the room was sit on the bed and read or sleep. They also said every room has wireless internet service, but they didnt say they charged you for it. They also did not change my bedding or give me a fresh towel in teh 3 days I was there. Again though for practically nothing it was a clean, safe, smell free, quiet, and overall great place for practically nothing. |

| Note: The front entrance is 315 94th St, if you go to the 96th St. address you'll have to go through another building then enter the back way. I stayed in a private double room for 3 nights. The bed wasn't very comfortable, but not too bad. It had a small closet with hangers, some shelves, and a small TV, which was a nice surprise. Two towels and soap bars were provided. There's an AC unit in the window, though I didn't try it because it was chilly. The first night the radiators in the building weren't working so it was freezing at night, but the next two nights they were back to working order and it was pleasantly warm enough. The bathrooms were clean with showers and the hot/cold water worked. This place is a hostel, so don't expect spotless cleanliness or perfect anything. I could smell smoking even though most visitors smoked outside as required. The front desk set up my shuttle back to the airport. I would go back here because the price is right and it's not too far out of the way like some other hostels that have private double rooms. There are other hotels nearby that are a little bit more expensive, so if you don't mind spending some more $, you'll have more comfort. |

| Candy was a frugal alternative to staying in New York, especially during the holidays. I really only needed a place to sleep during the evenings, so this place fit my needs well. The hostel is situated in a convenient location, near a number of subway lines and off a several major streets. For those looking to save money, this is your place. |

| This hostel has very limited facilities when compared to other hostels I've stayed at. It has only one small lounge, and only 4 computer terminals. |

| Considering the price you pay, Candy is a good option for those on a tight budget. In a city like New York, you don't go to stay in the hotel all day.
A few people complained about the room size, but in NYC, all rooms, even private residencies, are small. They provide a few blankets and a pillow, but I recommend you bring your own sheets.
Four rooms share a bathroom, so you don't have to really worry about fighting a bunch of guests. Candy provides a towel and some soap, but again, I would recommend you bring your own.
Transportation options are numerous. You are a short walk from the 96th St. Metro station and several bus stops. If you prefer, you can always hail a taxi on Broadway as well.
Candy isn't the most attractive lodging available in NYC, but it sure is practical. I would definitely recommend it. |
