Recent Carlton Hotel Review: "We were very pleased with the hotel. The staff were friendly, and the location is great. The only problem we had was with the bathroom. Granted, the hotel is old (but there's been a recent renovation) so they were stuck with what was there. That said, the bathroom was badly designed and tiny.
The sink was minuscule, there was no place to hang towels--no hooks, no racks, there was no place to put a toiletries kit except on the tank of the toilet. Speaking of the toilet, the toilet paper holder was directly in front of the toilet and so close I could not sit straight on the toilet because there wasn't enough room to get my knees in; I had to sit at a slant. Not helpful. The glass bathroom door was hug outside the frame in the bedroom, so the door didn't close tightly and there was a gap all around the door, which meant the noise from the bathroom could be heard by someone in the bedroom. I couldn't get my face down over the sink to get water on my face because the very large mirror was hung directly over the sink and I banged my head. You banged one's knuckles on the mirror bottom when turning on the water. The shower was a good size. Too bad they didn't knock a few inches off the width of the shower and use it to give more room in the rest of the bathroom. The wall of the shower was the same glass as the bathroom door. If you turned the light on in the shower, it lit up the bedroom. Despite the shortcomings of the bathroom--and I didn't cover them all--we enjoyed our stay in the hotel. Let's face it, we didn't spend a lot of time in the bathroom. We'd stay there again."

| Overview |
|
With its grand Beaux Arts façade, The Carlton Hotel easily fits in with the pinstriped ad men of Madison Avenue. But step through its revolving door, and you'll find a welcoming, thoroughly modern hotel with the flairs of yesteryear. A 2-story waterfall in the lobby reveals an oversized vintage photo of the hotel, which was built in 1908 and renovated for its centennial in 2008. The Carlton Hotel's Madison Avenue address makes it a great base for exploring the Big Apple. About 6 blocks from the hotel, the Empire State Building looms 102 stories. Get there early, though--the lines are almost as legendary as the views. When you're back on solid ground, walk 2 blocks farther to the flagship Macy's Herald Square, one of the world's largest department stores. Prefer the nightlife? Broadway theaters and Times Square are just a short cab ride away from the hotel. For dining, the Carlton has you covered: at the French brasserie Millesime, you can savor Duck Confit Hash & Eggs in the morning, choose from 5 preparations of mussels for lunch, then return in the evening for Lobster Pot-au-Feu. After dinner, head downstairs to Salon Millesime, and sip an artisanal cocktail while you enjoy live music or DJ-spun tunes, depending on the night. The Carlton's low-lit lobby bar provides a more subdued setting for a quiet nightcap. If you indulged in too many profiteroles at Millesime, burn some calories at the hotel's state-of-the-art fitness center, then cool off with a refrigerated towel. The center has equipment for all kinds of workouts and is accessible via room key 24 hours a day. After a day of meetings or sightseeing, retreat to your elegant Hotel Rooms and sink into a bed with crisp Frette linens and a plush down comforter. Watch a movie on the TV, or dock your iPod on the clock radio and relax to your favorite tunes. Check email with wireless Internet access (complimentary throughout the hotel). Finally, wash away the stress of the city with indulgent Molton Brown bath amenities.

During renovations, workers uncovered an authentic Tiffany dome that had been walled from view. The dome has now been restored to reflect its full glory, and is showcased in the hotel's restaurant.
