Recent Gramercy Park Hotel Review: "I stayed at the GPH the night before my wedding and it was quite a treat. I didn't mention anything to them when I made the reservation, but my wedding planner had dropped my wedding dress off in the afternoon and when I showed up they'd upgraded me to a larger room and had even given me a yummy cake! The service was professional, quick and thoroughly nice. The hotel was really quiet -- I had a view of the street and there was very little traffic and no noise, even though it was a Friday night. The amenities were also top quality and the lobby was lovely.
I live nearby. If you're from out of town and looking to get away from touristy New York, this area is a good choice. There are big familiar stores clustered around Union Square, but it's also a real neighborhood with real restaurants and stores and delis. It's easy to get to the big attractions, but also easy to ignore them and just blend in with the locals. Union Square is a major subway stop with a ton of taxis and it's easy to get around town from there."

The other side—the ethnically mixed East Village—is known for live music. For its string of nightclubs, Chelsea’s West 27th Street is known as Club Row.
