Recent Hilton Garden West 35th Review: "We were very, very pleased with the Hilton Garden Inn-35th St. The price we paid was about average for a non-luxury Midtown hotel but what we received was anything but average. For the same price range, I've come to expect worn carpet, mystery stains, beds that have been around since the Clinton Administration, non-functioning amenities, musty bathrooms,  and indifferent service. Not here. No sir, no way. Staff was very professional, attentive, friendly, and helpful, a serious cut above what you find at other modestly priced lodging in Manhattan.The room was absolutely spotless (great housekeeping staff!!!!), the bed was welcoming and luxurious, the microwave and fridge were excellent touches (mmmmm....morning leftover pizza!), the free internet connection was strong and reliable, the windows were nearly soundproof, and we would have been very happy to take the entire bathroom home with us. We were lucky to have a wonderful view from our 18th floor unit that included the ESB but even if we had the more typical NYC tourist hotel perspective of a dark brick wall, we would have been happy. Location is always important and this one filled the bill as well. You are basically sitting on top of the 34th St. Herald Sq. station, which provided quick access to the Village and Little Italy, along with reasonable service to the UWS. A short walk takes you to Penn Station, where the rest of the island is very doable. You're also sitting half way from Times Square and the Empire State Building, both easily walkable when cabs are not an option. I also liked being able to walk down to 5th Ave., Madison, or Park and catch a taxi going north or south, thus avoiding the crush around Broadway and Times Sq. where you just sit for no reason. Neighborhood is interesting, with Macy's next door, a street fair in Herald Sq. every Sunday, a zillion Irish pubs, and some interesting Korean bars. There is a huge 24 hour Duane Reade a very short stroll away. Vibe of the 'hood seemed very safe."
