Recent Hilton Newark Penn Review: "I found this hotel by accident as I had never thought about exploring the Newark side for staying in the NYC area. I come from DC so I typically take Tripper Bus, which drops off right at Penn Station, which is similar to Bolt Bus and Greyhound Bus. The great thing about the hotel is that the train ride is $5 one-way or $10 round-trip (no savings)  directly from Penn Station. It is two stops only with Secaucus in-between. Make sure to buy the ticket at one of the many machines since they charge a surcharge of $5 (!) in the train per ticket. The hotel is located directly across the train station - just crossing a small street is necessary - and the covered walkway is nice (it is closed late at night). The Newark train station is totally fine during the day and not necessarily great at night, but not apparently dangerous either. The hotel has a nice lobby and the rooms are fine. The wall in my room was a bit worn and the view is not that great - main intersection, parking lots, a bit of a river. From a coziness perspective, a place like the Wall Street Inn in NYC is a bit nicer. The hotel is actually a good choice if there is an event at the Newark Prudential Center across the street more or less - Andrea Bocelli was there in December - so that is worth a consideration as well. However, that being said, the price was excellent when I booked so it is a great choice for a short trip. For example, I can take the bus in, stay in the city, take the train to the hotel at night, take it back into the city the next day, and then take the bus back. All of that adds only $10 to the hotel cost for the train ticket. I really also enjoyed the bagels at the train station, which beats the breakfast at the hotel that was not included. So, in short, for an upcoming romantic weekend I have decided to spend a bit more and stay directly in NYC but I would stay here again, alone or with my girlfriend, for a "typical" NYC Broadway trip."
