Recent Hotel 17 Review: "First things first. When I was researching this hotel I was a little put off by the thought of shared bathroom facilities. Let me put anyone's mind a rest. There are at least four seperate bathrooms per floor that we could see and we did have a sink in our room (604) and they were kept perfectly clean throughout our stay. Do not let this put you off  this BARGAIN hotel. The location is PERFECT! Just a couple of minutes walk from Union Square subway station (do not be afraid, they are easy to navigate with a Metrocard - similar to an Oyster Card) you have easy and convenient access to the whole of New York. Although for the first three days we just walked everywhere to take in all the sights and soak up the atmosphere. The location is pretty much equal distances between the financial district to the south west, China Town and Little Italy to the South East, The Midtown skyscrapers and sights to the north/north east and Central Park to the north west. For a relaxed drink in the evening the aforementioned Union Square has a great vibe and a vide selection of different bars and restaurants to choose from. With this in mind Hotel17 is for people who want to make the most of their trip by being out and about because although the hotel is perfectly comfortable there are few amenities except a safe (no extra charge), a tv and a coffee maker in the room. But then who goes to New York to stay in their hotel all dayrrr In summing up, if (when!) we return to New York we would not consider even looking at another hotel when this was just perfect for our needs."

Overview
Looking for a budget-friendly hotel in a great downtown New York neighborhood? Hotel 17, near Union Square, fills the bill. With its quirky charm and Old New York feel, it's no wonder Woody Allen filmed his 1993 Manhattan Murder Mystery here--and Madonna lived here before she became a star. The area is primarily residential, but shops and restaurants--and not the typical tourist traps--are steps away. The East Village, famous for its counterculture outlook and buzzing nightlife, is a 3-block walk. Historic Union Square, one of New York's great public spaces, is just one-third mile west of Hotel 17. The fabulous outdoor Union Square Greenmarket, a favorite with locals and chefs, takes over the square every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Pick up some fresh seasonal fruit, a loaf of artisan bread, a wedge of farmstead cheese, and a sweet treat for a picnic in the city. Here, too, you'll find the Union Square subway station, a major transportation hub that'll get you all around town.

At Hotel 17, you'll get a clean, comfortable room that won't break the bank. Wireless Internet access is complimentary, so you can check out the reviews of all the local hotspots. Each room is decorated differently, reflecting Hotel 17’s individualistic personality. Rooms come with cable TV and vanity sinks. The shared bathrooms are nicely renovated and immaculately maintained. And, with just 2-4 Hotel Rooms sharing a bathroom, there's almost never a wait.

A short guide to Chelsea - East and West Villages

Washington Square, surrounded by NYU, divides the Villages. On one side, Greenwich and West villages lure writers and artists with its bohemian ethos, best experienced at a coffeehouse or jazz bar. The other side—the ethnically mixed East Village—is known for live music. For its string of nightclubs, Chelsea’s West 27th Street is known as Club Row. Chelsea is also the city’s main gay neighborhood.
