Recent Hotel 31 Review: "When I was looking for a reasonable hotel in NYC I was contemplating between a cheaper hostel / hotel and this hotel. I have learned to accept the "wisdom of the crowds" which showed that this one had an average rating of 4.2 whereas the other one had an average rating of 2.1 at the time I looked.
Well, this one was as described. There were two clean bathrooms in the hallways that were always available, the room was super clean and had everything necessary. The TV was tiny but I was busy watching Broadway shows so I did not need it.
The hotel has an odd construction so that there was only one window in my room which was directly toward a concrete wall so I did not have any direct sunlight (but I was only there in the evening so I did not care).
I looked at a bigger room, which looked fine for couples but I would not have stayed in with my girlfriend in my room as much as I have stayed in more luxurious hotels that are a bit more inviting overall - but, then again, I am sensitive to things like decor, lighting, etc.
However, for the price that I paid this was great. It was two short blocks from a subway, about seven blocks from Broadway, and getting to and from Broadway (around 45th street) via metro took only about 30 minutes with one transfer.
The neighborhood was totally fine and within a few blocks toward Broadway especially there were lots of restaurants, coffee shops, stores, etc.
The front desk service was very courteous and the maids very very nice as well. So, overall, given that the alternatives are either more dingy hostels or more expensive decent hotels, this one is a really satisfying compromise. I would definitely stay there again and even go with my girlfriend if our plans were to be out more, rather than spending an entire day in a hotel."

Located within a short walk of restaurants and bus and subway stops and 5 blocks from Madison Square Garden, Hotel 31 is a no-frills, budget-friendly option in bustling Midtown Manhattan. To kick off your sightseeing, walk 10 minutes to the iconic Empire State Building. The Art Deco skyscraper features sweeping views of the Big Apple from observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors. Stroll a few minutes farther to Herald Square, where the flagship Macy's claims the title of largest department store in the world. Enjoy a breath of fresh air in the urban oasis of Madison Square Park, less than a 10-minute walk from Hotel 31. Catch a summer concert or festival, then continue south through the park to the landmark Flatiron Building, a triangle-shaped skyscraper that was considered cutting-edge when it opened in 1902. If a Broadway show is on your travel agenda, you'll find Times Square is just a quick taxi or subway ride away. Hotel 31’s multilingual staff provides concierge services 24 hours a day, so obtaining theater tickets and restaurant reservations is a snap. And with 80 Hotel Rooms on 8 floors, the hotel feels quaint and homey (the elevator even dates to the building's 1940s opening). Each Hotel Rooms includes either a private or shared bathroom (rooms without private bathrooms have convenient in-room sinks). Wireless Internet access is complimentary throughout the building, so you'll never miss an important email or status update.

Some of NYC’s best-known landmarks are north of 14th and south of 59th—or Midtown Manhattan. Here, couples kiss atop the Empire State Building. Grand Central Station’s opal-faced clock is a famed meeting spot. While fortunes are made on Wall Street, fortunes are spent at Fifth Avenue’s shops. Other highlights include Madison Square Garden, the United Nations, and the Garment and Diamond districts.
