I don't care what the critic's say, the Chelsea still has that great vibe.

If turn-down service, heated towel racks or fog-free cosmetic mirrors are a must, the Chelsea is probably not for you. But if you have an interest in NYC's 20th Century cultural history and would like to stay in a room once occupied (and perhaps even haunted by) one of the past Century's most colorful artisans, there is nothing quite like the Chelsea. The rooms are clean and often very spacious. The essentials all work, pretty much as they would have in in 1969 -- as the electrician working on a fuse box commented: " I think the original work was done by Edison himself." But that's the charm of the Chelsea. Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen or Janis Joplin probably called down to the front desk to complain about the same flickering light. Climb the open stairs (a dozen or so flights) and take in the hotel's art work. There is nothing quite like it in the Met or the MOMA. And if you hear something in your room, at 2:00 am, don't be alarmed it's probably just the ghost of Dylan Thomas stumbling in.

Arriving in Manhattan, I was skeptical of the quality of the hotel I had booked for a brief summer getaway for a few friends and myself; walking past places like the New Yorker and the William Penn, who's entrances glowed and bustled, thinking of the photos I'd seen of the unassuming Hotel Chelsea, I worried I'd booked us a "dive" of sorts; a place who's name was made solely on the 'history' of famous tenants prior (a comprehensive list of which can easily be "googled.") Much to my surprise and delight, the Hotel Chelsea was easily one of the best places I'd ever made my home away from home; walking through the front door itself into a large lobby, walls adorned with artwork, to a front desk manned with a trio of exceptionally courteous hotel staff who, throughout the week, proved to be some of the most knowledgeable and entertaining characters we would meet in the city. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and the room we stayed in, a 'traditional double,' was perfectly sized for four college students and all of their belongings to fit comfortably. The shower, as many will note, was rather small, which was interesting to compare to the closet space, which we actually probably could have had someone sleep in, but the water was always warm and it functioned exactly as it needed to. Our room was on the first floor and, as the employee told us as he introduced us to the room, "people will look through the window." The shutters were 'busted,' for a lack of a better term, and we were unable to draw the curtain the whole way, so (apparently) there's a decent chance that someone was watching while we slept, but it never bothered us. What DID disturb was, and what stands as the only 'bad' experience in the hotel, was the discovery of a very large, very dead cockroach underneath one of the beds, which we had moved to recover a lost key or cell phone or something. Not squished by the heel of a shoe, even, but just 'dead,' evidently of it's own old age, which perhaps fri

We had a wonderful time during our stay at the Chelsea. The staff was friendly and helpful. Sure, it's not a five-star Hilton resort, but it has a history, a culture and a flavor. Our room was equally wonderful. We had plenty of space (there were four of us), with a walk-in closet, dinning area, kitchenette and our favorite part -the balcony. If you can deal with a few cracks in the plaster and a few non-working outlets this is an amazing place to stay. The neighborhood is totally alive (try Murray's Bagels) and close to many subway stops (C,E, and 1). The Hotel Chelsea helped me fall in love with New York, the way so many of its former residents did.

Stayed there when it was >90 degrees and there was no air conditioning in my room; contrary to what was advertised and what I paid for...they should adjust/credit my room charges.

We had such a great time in New York this past weekend and we were lucky to get to stay at the Hotel Chelsea. The art alone in the hotel will blow your mind - it's EVERYWHERE. The rooms are small and the paint is chipping and things haven't been updated in a while, but you don't stay at the Hotel Chelsea for luxury, you stay there for the history and to sleep where such amazing artists, musicians and screenwriters stayed. You could walk around for hours in that place just to see the art. The staff was super friendly and helpful and available. I would recommend staying here is you're a fan of art/music/poetry/etc. We will stay there again, for sure!

I stayed in the hotel for 3 nights from Oct 6 and i checked out at 10:00AM. Before my departure from the hotel to the airport at 7;30PM the day, I asked the staff member if I can use their toilet room. The staff member replied since I was no longer the hotel guest and there are no public toilet rooms, so my request cannot be granted. i told home that I was the guest of this hotel form 3 nights and there is a long journey from the hotel to the airport, Then he said Ok, you go to 2nd floor, there is one piblic toilet room. I ran to the 2nd floor but the door is locked, I knocked and there is no one answer. I ran to the front desk requesting for the key. the staff member told me---the door is locked and it is not his fault, he cannot help me neither. i traveled a lot, I have never been humilated by a hotel staff like Hotel Chelsea.

A lot of reviews on here let on like this place was a dump. It was the most amazing hotel I've ever stayed in. It was old, but it was VERY CLEAN. Our room had clean beds and towels, an air conditioner, a new television, and 2 french doors that went out to a balcony. They'll even park your car. Even from the 2nd floor, the view was amazing (and the street noise wasn't bad at all). This hotel is over 100 years old, it is not a chain, and it is rated as a 2 star hotel. There was no pool, breakfast, or ice machines waiting for us. This is a place for those who know of the Chelsea, its history, and appreciate art and old buildings. It truly is a rock n roll hotel. If a little cracked plaster and a 100 year old bathtub gives you the willies, then this isn't for you. And, may I add, get over yourself. As for the people who live here, they weren't "scary" (as one commenter put it). We can't all be beautiful people from the upper class suburbs, now can we? We spent 2 nights here just wondering the halls looking around the building and at the art that was displayed. I will definitely return. It was an amazing experience.
