Deciding upon the best of anything will always be a hotly debated issue, but never more so than when the topic is the best pizza in New York City. There is New York Style and then there is pizza sold in town and that is at the center of an argument all in itself. With so many different styles, it is safe to assume that comparing, say, New York Style with Chicago Deep Dish is nothing less than apples to oranges, and for the sake of ease, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

New York style pizza has thin crust. Many agree, the thinner the better. It is sparing on sauce and heavy on mozzarella. Traditional toppings are limited to just sauce and cheese with garlic being the only acceptable addition. While add-ons are common, the purists stop with cheese, a slice folded like a taco, and a crust that tastes of local water minerals.

The best pizzeria in the city sells slices that fit the purist’s requirements. Pizza Gruppo touts paper-thin crusts with all fresh ingredients. They are willing to top pizzas as the customer orders, but the menu says it like it is—“cheese and cheese alone.” There is no flare in the décor, and no fancy service strategies. Pizza is the point, and it is what they do best.

Still, Gruppo has got competition. Lombardi’s in fact, would call Pizza Gruppo the competition, not the other way around, because Lombardi’s was the first licensed Pizzeria in New York. So of course, they’ve got the bragging rights and the panache to back it up. Lombardi’s sets the par for all other pizzerias; however they make pizza is how pizza should be made. When Lombardi’s decided to add toppings in excess of cheese and garlic on their pizza pies, toppings became “legal” in NYC. Lombardi’s is the most lauded pizzeria in The Big Apple. Most people say it is impossible to come to New York without making a trip to the original Pizzeria. If someone says he visited New York City but not Lombardi’s, New Yorkers will correct him—he never came to the city at all.
