Free NYC Attractions: Yes, They Do Exist!

You have heard it said, “Nothing is free in this world.” However, unless you want to get into a deep philosophical debate, that saying is not entirely true. Take for example, the Staten Island Ferry. It may be one of New York City’s best-kept secrets and for the cost—free—travelers to the Big Apple will be hard-pressed to find better free NYC attractions to enjoy, when you consider the price of taxis or subways. The ferry’s great draw is its route. From the deck of the boat, passengers have the opportunity to sail right past Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Any other route that gets a traveler on the water, close enough to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, costs a good wage. On the Staten Island Ferry you will not have the chance to visit either of the little islands, rich with history, but you also don’t have to battle with excessive foot traffic, high costs and a subtle letdown. Both attractions are comparatively enjoyable from a distance, and may require little “up close and personal” attention.

When you reach your destination after twenty-five carefree minutes of sailing, you will be on Staten Island to walk about and enjoy the sights there. If you enjoy the standard New York attractions, the ferry is a good way to compromise on cost and iconic activity.

Aside from the ferry on the New York attractions list, people enjoy a trip to the Frick Art Museum, or a stroll around Red Hook Brooklyn. In the nineties, this Brooklyn neighborhood was rated as one of the most dangerous areas in New York. Today, however, it is an art haven and has plenty of good eateries and sights to see. Because the Red Hook neighborhood has gone through such a quick transformation, few people outside of the locals know it well. It is a great place to escape tourists.
