New York City Tourist Attractions |
Seeing the Big Apple from a bird’s eye view is something that even local New Yorkers cannot get enough of. The largest city in the United States, and fourth largest in the world, has enough to attract residents to new sights for their entire life. Anyone who wants to see New York City tourist attractions might gravitate toward the big five: Ellis Island, Times Square, Central Park, The Twin Towers Memorial and the Empire State Building. However, you also may enjoy digging for some of the more little known spots that define the city.
For a stunning view of the city skyline, you cannot avoid a trip to the Empire State Building. It is (currently) the tallest building in New York at 102 floors. From its top, you can see 360 degrees around and survey the amazing skyline from an intimate height that highlights the magnificence of the metropolitan area. Admission to the observation deck is $20—money well spent.
The Woolworth building, though scarcely mentioned, deserves recognition. It is among the oldest skyscrapers in the world and its gothic architectural construction makes it stand apart from many of the other tall buildings in the city. It will not be the scraper to scale, since it is dwarfed by some of the other buildings on the skyline, but viewed from close up, it is an impressive work of art.
The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine rounds off the top list of architectural displays that should make your list of sights to see. This cathedral is affectionately dubbed "St. John the Unfinished," as it has been under construction for its entire existence. Inside and out, its detail is breathtaking.
Because there is no other city with so many buildings of such varied style, visitors should endeavor to see as much as possible, but it is also a great idea to enjoy the culture that cannot be found elsewhere. If you have the budget for entertainment, you can catch a show on Broadway; "The Lion King" has gotten rave reviews. You may also consider attending the filming of one of NYC’s many television shows, like David Letterman, during your stay. With so much to do, you could go around the clock, eating, visiting, eating, walking, and eating some more, for a whole week and not graze the surface of the Big Apple.
